After hearing them talk about their music and watching them live as the Baybeat's closing out performers, it gave me an impression that this band are true ambassadors of Hardcore/Punk. A band on a mission not only to play hardcore but also to educate mainstream music fans about what Hardcore is all about. And boy did King Ly Chee closed out Baybeats 2012 with a loud bang!
Before King Ly Chee's performance at the Powerhouse stage, they were at the library@esplanade for an up-close and personal with the fans, complete with freebie stuff and crowd surfing activities.

As cliche as I may sound, but Urbandub rocked our socks off at the Powerhouse venue!
Their music speaks for itself. Every part of their set is a superb display of musicianship and performance. From dynamite guitar riffs, from fast to slow tempo songs, they can do it all. And the entertainment factor is also Top of the charts level! Everyone of them, including bassist Lalay displayed great showmanship towards the crowd. A thirty-minute set of blending nice riffage with great vocals from this Post-hardcore band from Malaysia.
This local Hardcore band is a fitting Powerhouse stage opener on the last day of the festival. In my opinion they've set the perfect atmosphere for the rest of the evening as they've worked the crowd with their agressively heavy hardcore tempo and successfully melded it with great showmanship. The hardcores opened up the pit. See video filmed from the stage here as A Town in Fear "Open up the Pit!"
Audience Impact - This band gets a perfect score. One of the local bands that played at the Powerhouse, Singapore obviously love these guys, and have a very good reason to do so. I also give props to their frontman for an epic "jump-shot" which I miserably failed in capturing (see Plainsunset's jumpshot). What happened after the jumpshot was an epic one, and I salute him for his courage! more photos of Plainsunset at Baybeats 2012Talk about LSS from the Baybeats 2012 and I'll immediately say "Okie-Dokie, ska ska ska" from Korean band Copy Machine. That, after hearing them play it live, and after hearing it play several times through the venue's piped-in music. They were the only ska band who performed in this year's festival, and I'd love to see them again next year. They're fun to watch. I''ve seen Singapore do the 2-steps at Hardcore mosh pits before and it's refreshingly fun to watch a Ska band and see Singapore fans dance to it. Audience Impact - Like I've mentioned previously, they really got the Singapore dance to ska. And that was from the first song, which instantly surged excitement. I myself couldn't help moving to the pulsating beat of their song "Dynamite"
The first band at the Powerhouse stage on Day 2 was Embrace Them Ghosts. Normally I would arrive at the venue prior to the soundcheck but this time I was late, and had to work my way to the front barricade. I hesitated at first but when I heard and saw these guys play on stage, I couldn't stop the urge to move in closer! Interaction with the crowd - this band is Power uncle! During their set, the Singapore fighter jets were flying noisily above as they are doing practice drills for the up-coming Singapore national day parade. But not even that can stop this group from rocking this place.

The weeklong festival offers a wide variety of genre, ranging from folk, pop, punk, hardcore, metal, emo, ska and many more. I've learned to survive at the mosh pit and the stage metal barrier, coming out in one piece and with my camera still intact. My favorite venue was at the Powerhouse, where I think most of the heavyweight line-ups i.e. where the louder bands played. The Powerhouse venue is where most of the international audiences have gathered during the Festival. Like for instance on Day 1, the redheaded and blonde haired caucasian teenage girls came to see teenage heartthrobs Godzilla. Or for example in Day 2, when International bands like Thailand's Plot performed, I heard "Sawadee Kap" greetings from the crowd behind me. The Korean fans of Copy Machine were also in attendance as they gamely danced to the sound of Ska. Music indeed unites everyone. It defies age, sex, religion or nationality, and that's what Baybeats festival exemplifies. Of all the fans, I must say that the Hardcore, Metal and Punk fans are the friendliest people in Singapore in my opinion. I say that because on all the times I got shoved and elbowed during the frenzied 2-step dancing or moshing, I've always received apologies or a respectful nod. The official photographers at the photo pit were very polite too. Some of them even stoop down sometimes to allow us barricade warriors to have a clear view of the bands. Much like my shuffling of lenses in between sets, I've also shuffled my timing to visit other venues in between band rotations. Photos were taken with 50mm f1.8, 85mm f1.8 and with the 24-70mm f2.8L as my workhorse. Sometimes alternating with 85mm for tighter shots, risking dust going to my sensor with people jumping up-and-down behind me while I change lenses. A lot of take home knowledge from this 3-day gig photo experience. A lot of things I know I can improve on, and I'm very eager to shoot another gig and take on new challenges. Overall, the festival was a blast! I am now a certified, self-proclaimed Baybeats fan and I'll make sure I don't miss it next year. Hopefully I'll be able to do better next time, to capture more emotions, and better action photos. Thanks for viewing my blog and I appreciate any comments. PEACE on EARTH! |
